GAIS Students Raise Funds for Malawi

At the conclusion of this year's fundraising program to help underprivileged children around the world, GAIS recently sent $6359.05 to the Roche Children's Walk Steering Committee. The funds were collected through the initiative of the 6th and 7th graders for the children in Malawi. There were two main events that took place. A bake sale and concert was organized by the 7th grade, where volunteers from all the grades performed and sold baked goods donated by the parents. This event took place on Friday May 22 and raised $700.55. On May 29th we had the Walk-A-Thon organized primarily by the 6th grade. This was similar to last year's and followed the summer sport event the school has every year. Roche provided the t-shirts and as a reward the kids all got fruit popsicles after completion of the walk.

The delegation from Roche, led by Gabrielle Heilek, commented that they were touched by the enthusiasm that the children brought to this event. Many students were proud to circle more than 20-30 times around the meadow. With the matched contribution from Roche, our fundraising result represents a healthy amount to go to the centers and in the continued effort to bring education and schools to Malawi.

The organization for this project, Re&Act of the Roche Children's Walk Steering Committee, is located in Berne, Switzerland. In response to the donation the project organizer, Vivian L. Beetle, commented, "Clearly this reflects your personal enthusiasm and dedication to our shared commitment in Malawi. But it is even a stronger expression of all those youngsters who worked and walked and performed, yet have never been to Malawi. The ongoing, year-round efforts on everyone's part is absolutely exemplary."
